    Anita and Richard,
We are also in the moving-to-Portugal mode. we are taking the necessary steps. We lived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for a year but that was not our cup of tea. Our biggest concern is selling a leased car. I have consulted the “web” about this and the best way is to sell in on the open market and deal with the dealership after that. Did you have similar problems? We are very much looking forward to arriving and getting our applications in for residency. Hope to be there in the September time frame. Perhaps we can share a carafe of wine.

    • Hi Kerry and Joyce,
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, I can’t answer your question regarding a leased car and, in fact, we’d hoped to avoid buying a car at all when we first arrived in Portugal. Public transportation is terrific in Lisbon and Porto but in a rural place like the Algarve Region, it’s much more practical to have your own and a great way to get to know the area. Renting a car during the off season is fairly manageable but, as with all prices during high season, the costs skyrocket in July and August.
Your previous experiences as expats in Puerto Vallarta have probably opened your eyes to living long term in a place versus living as a tourist. (I’ve always thought that it’s just as important to know what you don’t want as what you do.) We were able to use our experiences as slow travelers through many villages, cities and countries to easily make the decision to call Portugal our home when we ready to find a base. Portugal is a fabulous place to live and I wish you a smooth and speedy visa application and review process. Make sure to give a shout-out when you arrive in the Algarve. It’s always fun to meet new people and sharing a carafe of wine sounds great! Anita
